Charlotte win pushes UNCP past Valdosta in AFCA poll

WACO, Texas — Days after topping Division I Charlotte, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke football team made the leap into the top 10 in in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
The No. 10 Braves (5-0) jumped three spots in Monday’s poll, which included a bump over No. 12 Valdosta State. Valdosta, the defending national champion and last week’s top rank-ranked team, lost 49-30 to West Alabama.
It is the first time the Braves have started a season with five straight wins.
In addition to the rankings bump, UNCP quarterback Luke Charles earned his national award this year, being named the Offensive Player of the Week by Beyond Sports Network.
Charles threw for a school record 403 yards and three touchdowns on 43-of-57 passing on Saturday. His yardage mark broke his own school record from earlier this season. It was the eighth time that Charles has passed for 300 or more yards, and the eighth time he has thrown three or more touchdown passes.
Charles owns 30 single game, single season or career records at UNCP, including eight of the top 10 marks for single game passing yards. A starter since 2011, Charles has thrown for 6,925 yards and 54 touchdowns on 577-of-933 passing with 27 interceptions.
UNCP hosting hoops kickoff Thursday
PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s basketball teams will host the third annual Moonlight Madness event on Thursday in the English E. Jones Center.
The annual event, which starts at 7, will include player introductions, skill demonstrations, a dunk contest and a 20-minute scrimmage by both the men’s and women’s teams. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in contests throughout the night with the possibility of winning select prizes including an Apple iPad, as well as judge the dunk contest.
Admission and parking for the event are free.
LHS soccer tops Scotland
LAURINBURG —The Lumberton soccer team got its second straight 1-0 win on Monday, beating Scotland with an early goal.
Jace Ward recovered a ball that deflected off Scotland goalie Brandon McDonald and put it in with 28 minutes left in the first half. Lumberton controlled possession for the majority of the game but couldn’t find the last pass to set up a shot.
The Pirates (12-5, 7-2 SEC) close out conference play on Wednesday at home against Purnell Swett.
Richmond downs LHS volleyball
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton volleyball team lost to Lumberton in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference tournament. The Raiders defeated the Pirates 25-15, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22.
UNCP’s Clark gets PBC award
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Coming off last week’s win over No. 3 Lander, UNCP soccer senior Payne Clark was named the Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Clark was instrumental as the Braves became the first team this season to beat the Bearcats.
He ssisted on the opening and game-winning goa and scored the final goal with a header near the right post.
Boykins breaks own school record
AUGUSTA, Ga. — UNCP Sophomore Kyndal Boykin broke her own school record in the 5K this week and was named the Astro Turf/Peach Belt Conference Runner of the Week for the second time this season.
In a race that featured 240 runners, Boykins dropped 47 seconds and placed 10th overall on Friday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte. Her time of 18:06.6 was the best in the PBC.
