ANDERSON, S.C. — The 16th-ranked University of North Carolina at Pembroke baseball team got multiple-hit outings from seven different players and used a six-run second inning to finish off a weekend sweep of Anderson with a 14-7 win over the Trojans on Sunday.
It is the fourth-straight year that the Braves (3-0) have opened the season with a three-game sweep and the team’s 14th straight win against the Trojans (0-3).
Jordan Edgerton, who went 4-for-6, doubled twice, drove in a trio of runs and scored three times to lead a seven Braves with multiple hits. Daniel Fraga also went 4-for-6, a career best, and Dalton Knight drove in a career-best five runs on a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Nathan Galliford homered on a 3-for-5 outing for Anderson.
Connor Pratt (1-0) struck out three and picked up the win for the Braves despite allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in five innings of work.
After trading lone runs in the first inning, UNCP took the lead for good after sending 10 batters to the plate in a six-run, four-hit second inning that was highlighted by a base-clearing double from Edgerton. Two-run singles from both Fraga and Knight in the fifth pushed the lead out to 12-4.
Women’s golf takes 6th at Tusculum
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — UNCP freshman Ashlii Thompson scored a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to finish two strokes off the leader and take third place and help lead the 29th-ranked women’s golf team to a share of sixth place at the Tusculum-hosted Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Sunday.
It was the third top five finish of the season for Thompson who finished 3-over and shared third place on the individual leaderboard with two other players. Dana Watkins (+13) finished in a three-way tie for 30th place and Pembroke native Laura Bird (+15) was in a three-way tie for 34th place. Gabby Milam (+22) and Kelly Sumner (+25) finished in 57th and 67th place, respectively.
Savannah College of Art & Design’s Sofia Molinaro scored a 1-over-par and won a scorecard playoff with Florida Tech’s Johanna Larsson to capture medalist honors. Eighth-ranked Barry (+21) out-paced the rest of the 18-team field by four strokes to capture team title honors.
Volleyball hosting Shamrock Shuffle
PEMBROKE — The UNCP volleyball team will host the inaugural Braves’ Shamrock Shuffle on March 15th. The race will include a 5K competition as well as a one mile walk/kids fun run around campus.
Interested participants can pre-register for the race until February 25th. The price of registration for the 5K is $25, and $15 for the one mile fun run, which includes an event t-shirt. The price of registration increases to $30 and $20 for the 5K and one mile fun run, respectively, on the day of the race.
Participants must be 12 years or older for the 5K, and five years or older for the one mile fun run. All participants must sign an official release prior to the race. Cash or checks will be accepted, please make checks payable to UNC Pembroke Volleyball. All participants will receive free entry into the UNCP baseball game against Georgia Southwestern at 1 p.m. by showing their racing bib.
