James Quick

RED SPRINGS — A Red Springs man wanted for discharging a firearm within the town limits, has been charged with setting a Fayetteville woman’s dog on fire on Sunday.

James Franklin Quick, 23, of Fourth Avenue, is jailed in Cumberland County after authorities there say he poured an accelerant on the dog before setting it ablaze.

Authorities said Quick dated the dog’s owner and after the two broke up, had sent her threatening messages.

Dominique Clark told deputies that she let her dog, Cocoa, out to run around the yard, and a short time later, heard the dog scratching and crying at her door. When her son opened the door to let Cocoa inside, he saw the dog was on fire, and Clark used some of her clothing to smother the flames.

The Chihuahua mix was taken to veterinary clinic where she was treated for burns to the body and face.

Quick has been charged with animal cruelty and burning of personal property.

There were already outstanding warrants for Quick, who Red Springs police say, was charged with possession of firearm by a felon and discharging a weapon within city limits.

That incident occurred on May 25, according to LaSevenn Richardson, a detective sergeant with the Red Springs Police Department.

“We had been looking for him, but he had left the area,” Richardson said. “Once he has made an appearance on the charges in Fayetteville, they will bring him to Robeson County for his charges down here.”

Quick was convicted in 2012 for breaking and entering and larceny.
