HARTSVILLE, S.C. — The 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied back from an early deficit but a late error led to the game-ending run in an 8-7 loss to Coker in 11 innings on Tuesday.
The Cobras’ Dustin Russell, who reached on an error to start the 11th and moved to third on a ground out, scored on a single down the right-field line by Jarren Donato for the Braves’ (27-12) third loss in the last five games.
UNCP will host Coker (20-16) at 6 p.m. today in the second half of a home-and-home series.
The Braves were led by Ben Schmucker, who tripled and drove in a run on a 3-for-5 day at the plate, and Daniel Fraga homered and scored twice on a 2-for-6 hitting line. Drew Cole also turned in a 3-for-6 outing. Nine different players logged base hits for the Cobras, including Jack Leech who singled three times and scored once on a 3-for-5 plate performance.
Zach Andrews (2-4) limited Coker to just three hits in 2-2/3 innings of relief work, but saddled the loss with his only allowed run.
A leadoff home run by Fraga combined with a sac fly by Dalton Knight three batters later gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Coker sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run second inning. The Cobras plated another to extend the lead to 7-1 in the fifth, but the Braves scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth and one more in the ninth to tie it.
