LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Police Department is investigating a report that more than $15,000 has been stolen from the Tanglewood Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association’s treasury.
According to Capt. Terry Parker of the Lumberton Police Department, the president of the Parent-Teacher Association, Dawn Gavasci, alerted police about the missing money. A suspect is identified in the report, but The Robesonian elected not to publish the person’s name since no charges have been filed. Gavasci could not be reached.
“Initially it was about $10,000 to $20,000, but that number has gone up,” Parker said.
The association is made up of parents and other supporters of the school; it raises money to promote activities at the school.
The principal of the school, Joanna Hunt, said she could not comment.
Tasha Oxendine, a Public Relations officer for the Public Schools of Robeson County, said school officials are aware of the situation.
“Administrators are concerned about the situation at Tanglewood,” Oxendine said in a statement. “All PTA organizations are separate entities from the Public Schools of Robeson County. As such, the appropriate authorities are investigating.”
