LUMBERTON — With Halloween a few weeks away, The Robesonian is looking to provide a lucrative treat for those who get tricked up.
The newspaper is offering $150 to the best Halloween costume in Robeson County. The contest will have four additional costume winners — the scariest, the funniest, the cutest and the most original — whose creators will each receive a $50 cash prize.
“I think overall it’s just a fun contest, and it’s a way to show off to your friends and family your creative costumes. It also allows your kids to show off a little bit,” said Robin Walker, business development manager at The Robesonian.
The winners of each category are chosen by online votes. Submissions will be accepted beginning Oct. 20, voting begins on Nov. 3 and continues until Nov. 9. Winners will be notified by email on Nov. 10 and announced in the newspaper the following week.
Alison Locklear, owner at Better Choice Insurance, said she decided to sponsor the overall winner of the contest because it would be a great opportunity to advertise and promote her company, Better Choice Insurance. She said she opened in December to give people another choice for insurance. Because the agency is a smaller company, it can be more hands on, which is another reason why Locklear sponsored the contest.
“We like to get involved with our customers and the community,” Locklear said. “Here at Better Choice we greet people by name, our customers are welcomed and are not just a number.”
Walker said if community involvement is what a company is looking for, then this contest is perfect.
“The contest allows local businesses to interact and have fun with the Robeson County community,” she said.
Beth Hunt of Clayton Homes, the sponsor of the most original category, is already in a Halloween frame of mind.
“I’m pretty excited about the contest,” Hunt said, “We decorate our center so we decided it would be a fun thing to do.”
To enter, visit www.robesonian.com and fill out the online registration form with contact information that the newspaper will need should you win. If you have entered any past contest sponsored by The Robesonian, your user name and password are still valid. Then attach the photo to the appropriate category.
Once you have submitted the photo, show it off to your friends and family and get them to vote early and often.
“This contest works the same way as our previous contests, the person with the most votes will win,” Walker said. “So the earlier you upload your picture, the more time you have to get people to vote for you.”
The other sponsors for the contest are Ferrell Gas, whic will sponsor the cutest category; Elite Cellular, which will sponsor the scariest category; and Dowless Catering, which will sponsor the funniest category.
