LAURINBURG — An inmate serving a life sentence in Scotland Correctional Institution for the 2000 murder of a Cumberland County man has killed himself, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Ronald L. Goodman III, 32, was found dead late Friday afternoon at Scotland Correctional Institution. According to Scotland County Sheriff Shep Jones, Goodman was found hanging by the neck in the prison canteen, where he worked. Goodman had been denied parole, Jones said.

Goodman’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Goodman was convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting death of 30-year-old Kenneth Highsmith. According to previous reports, Goodman turned himself in on April 22, 2000, three days after the shooting. Goodman told police that he repeatedly shot Highsmith with Highsmith’s gun when the two argued over drugs.
