PEMBROKE — The Robesonian has learned that Pembroke Town Manager Oryan Lowry was suspended for using the town’s credit card to make almost $1,200 worth of unauthorized purchases.

On Tuesday, the Pembroke Council met in closed session to discuss the matter, but took no public action. It is expected to meet again on Monday to discuss the matter..

The council on Dec. 2 suspended Lowry for 10 days without pay. The suspension would end on Thursday.

Members of the council and Town Attorney Gary Locklear have said they could not discuss the matter because it is personnel.

Lowry is expected to return to work on Thursday. The Robesonian has not been unable to reach Lowry to see if he wanted to comment.

The Robesonian requested and received from the town its credit card statement for the past two months. The transactions that are in question, which total $1,187.71, are as follows: a $70.41 purchase made at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke bookstore.; a $130.03 purchase made at the Belk store at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville; a $573.40 purchase made at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas; a $66.63 purchase made at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Orem, Utah; a $89.37 purchase made at the Sundance Deli in Sundance, Utah; and a $257.87 purchase made at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Robesonian has learned that the purchases in Utah were made when Lowry was visiting a sister who lives there.

Lowry was hired as Pembroke’s manager in July 2012. He replaced McDuffie Cummings, who retired after working as the town manager for 34 years. Lowry makes $53,000 a yeat.
