LUMBERTON — An 80-year-old Lumberton woman was almost conned out of $192 that she believed she owed on a bill with a local funeral home.

According to the owner of Revels Funeral Home, she’s just one of six people to report the scam since Friday.

“We do not have anyone working for us that goes out to collect any type of money for bills, insurance or anything,” said Juddie Revels, of Revels Funeral Home.

According to Revels, two white men in suits have been going door-to-door claiming they were collecting insurance and burial payments on behalf of the funeral home, which has locations in Pembroke and Lumberton.

Revels said he has received calls from several elderly people saying they were visited at home and asked for money, but that so far the 80-year-old woman is the only one to hand over a check. Revels said the scam came to light when the woman called to let him know she had paid her bill. According to Revels she was able to stop payment on the check.

“I would like to be able to warn others of this terrible group that is trying to take advantage of people by using my company name,” Revels said.

Anyone asked to pay a fraudulent bill can contact police. Those who have made payments under false pretenses should contact their bank immediately.
