LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a deputy who shot a Red Springs man on Monday, and identified the injured man.

Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said Deputy Gary Altman is still on paid administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation determines whether he followed protocol when he fired his weapon at 45-year-old Brian Keith Bell.

Sealey said Bell was involved in an altercation with another man on the 3400 block of McQueen Road when Altman responded to the scene alone. When Altman got out of his vehicle, Sealey said, Bell fired at him.

According to Sealey, Altman asked Bell several times to put down his weapon but Bell aimed the gun at him. Altman fired, striking Bell in the face.

Sealey said Tuesday that Bell was taken to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill with a non life-threatening injury. A hospital spokesperson said there was no patient listed under that name.

Bell, who lives on Vatte Drive in Lumberton, may face charges after his release, Sealey said.
