Store paid penalties, has now passed inspection

LUMBERTON — A Lumberton pharmacy is among 12 stores cited by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division for overcharging customers, according to a statement from the department.


The CVS, located at 2771 W. Fifth St., was required to pay $2,025 in civil penalties and has since passed inspection.


“Shoppers count on paying the advertised price for an item,” Steve Troxler, agriculture commissioner, said in the statement. “By checking the accuracy of price-scanning systems in retail stores, we are helping to ensure that when shoppers get to the checkout counter, they get the advertised price.”


The Standards Division regularly makes unannounced inspections to check that a store’s advertised prices match those that ring up at registers. If a store has more than a 2 percent margin of error on overcharges, a second, more thorough inspection is conducted. If the store fails the follow-up inspection, it is subject to fines and re-inspection every 60 days until it is up to code.


An initial inspection of the Lumberton CVS in February found an error rate of 26 percent, based on 13 overcharges and a second inspection in March found an error rate of 11.33 percent, based on 34 overcharges.


The store passed inspection in June with an error rate of 1.67 percent.


Stores in Caldwell, Cleveland, Gaston, Johnston, Mecklenburg and Rockingham counties were also fined for excessive price scanner errors.
