Registration is underway in the Public Schools of Robeson County for kindergarten and preschool students for the upcoming school year. Registration dates for schools across the district are staggered through March and April.

The Title I Preschool Program will conduct its spring screening from May 12 to May 16. The available 408 Title I Preschool slots are filled based on scores children receive on a battery of assessments conducted by certified preschool staff. In addition to the battery of assessments, children will be screened by qualified technicians for hearing, vision and speech development.

Early registration saves time and stress by providing opportunities for schools and families to adequately prepare. If a child will be 4 years old by Aug. 31, that child is eligible to be screened for the Title I Preschool Program. State law also requires that a child must be 5 years of age by Aug. 31 in order to enter kindergarten.

Parents of potential preschool children may complete applications for the Title I program through April 30 to ensure an appointment for the May screening. Applications are available in all elementary schools, at the Health Department and various other locations across Robeson County. The application may be downloaded from the Public Schools of Robeson County’s website at www.robeson.k12.nc.us/Domain/35

Applications received after April 30 will be reserved for the fall screening to fill any available slots.

While the enrollment period for kindergarten continues through the beginning of school in August, the sooner parents begin the registration process, the better. The early registration allows the district to have an idea of how many children to prepare for, as well as to have teachers and classrooms ready. Parents who wait may encounter delays in scheduling appointments with health care providers, or with gathering pertinent information for schools.

The Public Schools of Robeson County averages about 2,000 children each year for kindergarten and other early grades. Each year, more than half will register during the kindergarten event, and students will trickle in during the summer and through the first days of school. At each school’s registration, parents will have the opportunity to speak with the school staff, bus drivers, nurses, social workers and other members of faculty who all work together to meet the needs of each child.

Another key factor in early registration is meeting any special health needs of the child before school begins. These registration checkpoints act as a health safety net for children to ensure complete immunizations, assess physical or behavioral health, and link families with dental or health insurance information. Health care providers can put together a plan for children with various health issues such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders and life-threatening allergies.

Parents should bring the original birth certificate, current immunization records, verification of physical address, tribal enrollment card (if applicable), and Social Security number (Preschool). You may also contact your school office for other requirements.

North Carolina law requires kindergarten and preschool children to have an up-to-date shot record and completed health assessment by the time school starts. The required health assessment form can be obtained from the school office or by visiting www.robeson.k12.nc.us/kha. Immunizations and health assessments will be offered by the Robeson County Child Health Plus Bus at some registrations in the district.
