LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Humane Society will debut a new event this week as a way to raise money.

Bark at the Moon, a cocktail reception, will be held at the Humane Society’s shelter at 3180 W. Fifth St. in Lumberton on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., according to Mark Schwarze, president of the Robeson County Humane Society. He believes holding the event at the shelter will help people understand the organization’s mission.

“People will have an opportunity to see the things that we are doing inside the shelter,” Schwarze said. “The public will be able to see the challenges that the society has to deal with from a facility stand point because we have a very old facility.”

Hors d’oeuvres and beverages, including alcohol, will be available. There is no charge to attend, but cash donations are encouraged as well as supplies that the shelter can use.

The proceeds will be used for the maintenance and operation of the shelter’s facility and the well-being and comfort of the animals.

According to Schwarze, last year’s fundraiser was a dinner at Pinecrest Country Club that raised about $17,000. The goal for Bark at the Moon is to raise $20,000.

“At the end of the day, improving the lives of animals is everybody’s business,” Schwarze said. “It affects everyone in one way or another.”
