Fringe: Ghaffar gets comeback win

Local junior Walter Ghaffar continued his successful summer when he won the 11-and-under division of the Ping Junior Amateur held Aug. 15 and 16 at River Landing in Wallace.
Ghaffar shot an 8-over-par 80 in the first round, which was played in rain, and trailed the leader by 1 stroke. He finished the tournament with a 74 on the second day finish the tournament at 10-over-par 74. He beat day one leader Lee Plummer by two strokes.
The tournament included 42 youth golfers from around North Carolina and one from South Carolina competing in three divisions. Ghaffar was the youngest golfer at the tournament, which was run by Tarheel Junior Golf.
Wednesday is the final day to register for the Member-Guest tournament at the Fairmont Golf Club.
The tournament will utilize two-person teams made up of a club member and their guest. On Saturday the teams will play best ball and on Sunday they’ll play Texas Scramble. A 1 p.m. shotgun start is scheduled for both days
There is a $230 fee which includes a cart and greens fees, refreshments, lunch and prizes. The fee also covers a practice round and Calcutta on Friday, dinner for golfers and a date on Saturday and a meal for golfers only on Sunday.
The club will also hold the Fairmont Chamber of Commerce’s four-person captain’s choice tournament on Oct. 18 at 12:30 p.m.

There’s still time to get register for the Robeson County Community College Foundation’s 29th annual Clifford Bullard Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 19.
The tournament serves as a fundraiser to help the foundation in its mission to offer financial support to programs and activities, as well as give scholarships to students.
The tournament is a four-man captain’s choice with each team consisting of an A, B, C and D player. Play begins at 12:30 p.m. The entry is $75 per player, which include greens and cart fees, refreshments, mulligans, prizes and lunch an hour before tee time. Sponsorships are also available.

Carolyn McNiell, Margaret Standifer, Toni Robinette and Elise Shipman won Monday’s Ladies League.
Tommy Sipka and Bill Fountain won the championship flight of Tuesday’s Senior Shootout. Bobby Benton and Marshall McDonald won the first flight and Charles Hickman and Tom Jones won the second flight.
Wednesday’s 2-Ball Texas Scramble winners were Mel Britt, Jeff Nance and Dave Batchelder.
Senior Shootout is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
