ROWLAND — Chuck Walters continued his recent torrid stretch for St. Pauls Friday night, scoring three touchdowns in a variety of ways during the Bulldogs’ 39-14 victory at South Robeson.

Walters helped St. Pauls improve to 3-1 in the Three Rivers Conference and 6-2 overall with a 13-yard touchdown reception, a 7-yard run and a 40-yard punt return in the third quarter that put his team ahead by 13 points. Quarterback Malik Livingston added more than 200 yards of offense and three scores of his own to keep the Bulldogs on pace in league play with fellow one-loss member Fairmont.

During the opening quarter, South Robeson’s Andrew Hill questioned head coach Stephen Roberson’s decision to keep him off the field for disciplinary reasons the first two possessions. Robeson County’s leading rusher voiced his displeasure to several assistants before he was escorted off the playing field by an assistant coach and school resource officer to the locker room.

Hill did not return to the game and Roberson says a decision has not been made on Hill’s future with the team.

“We self-destructed and weren’t disciplined,” Roberson said. “We had a host of missed tackles and bad plays. For me, this was worse than the South Columbus loss. We had some guys act selfish and I’m not going to stand for that.”

In Hill’s absence, senior Juan Ellerbe rushed for 170 yards on a grueling 32 carries but South Robeson’s offense stalled inside the red zone throughout the contest.

St. Pauls scored first, mounting an 11-play drive that ended with Walter’s 13-yard touchdown reception. His rushing touchdown came on the Bulldogs’ next drive.

The Bulldogs retained possession following a failed fake punt attempt by South Robeson. Six plays later, Walters scampered in for a 14-0 lead.

South Robeson’s Kalvis Chavis later scored from 1 yard out and a conversion narrowed the lead to 14-8. The lead never got closer than six points and Walters’ punt return, which made the game 27-14, put it out of reach.
