LUMBERTON — Senior wrestler Joshua Watts extended his unbeaten streak to 18 matches with two wins during Lumberton High’s final home event of the season Tuesday against West Brunswick and St. Pauls.

The Pirates split the head-to-head matchups as a team, beating the Bulldogs, 45-26, and falling to West Brunswick, 45-27.

Three other Lumberton grapplers went 2-0 — Haley Roach, Troy Hunt and Thomas Thompson — during their final bouts before the holiday break.

“Right now, we’re just trying to get more experience,” Lumberton wrestling coach Jamie Bell said. “Half of our team are first-year wrestlers and freshmen. More experience will help them. Our veteran guys like Josh and Troy are fine tuning and coasting.”

The meat of Lumberton’s Southeastern Conference slate starts in January.
