PEMBROKE — On the heels of a 2013 campaign that included its second berth into the NCAA Division II Playoffs, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke football team checked in at No. 21 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II Preseason Coaches Poll
The Braves are one of three state teams included in the listing and joins 2013 national runner-up Lenoir-Rhyne and week one opponent Winston-Salem State (No. 14) in the poll. North Alabama, a week six opponent for the Braves, checked into the poll in the No. 5 position.
Fresh off of its fourth NCAA Division II title, Northwest Missouri State opens up 2014 as the preseason favorite to win the national championship. Grand Valley State (Mich.) checked in at No. 2 and was followed by Minnesota-Duluth and Colorado State-Pueblo.
The Braves will open up their eighth season of intercollegiate football on Friday when they makes the short trip to Winston-Salem to battle the Rams in a 6 p.m. contest at Bowman-Gray Stadium. UNCP football season tickets can be purchased by calling the UNCP ticket office at 910-521-6361.
Womens XC tabbed to finish fifth
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Following a fourth place finish at the Peach Belt Conference Championships last year, the UNCP womens cross country team was tabbed to finish fifth by the league’s coaches in 2014, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Braves earned a total of 81 points. The tally was two points behind Montevallo in fourth and eight points ahead of North Georgia in sixth.
The 2013 PBC Champions, Flagler, holds down the top honor with 118 points, while Columbus State follows in second with 105 points and Clayton State sits in third with 94 points. GRU Augusta, Georgia College, Young Harris, Georgia Southwestern, USC Aiken and Francis Marion round out the order from seventh to 12th, respectively.
Under the direction of new head cross country coach Peter Ormsby, the Braves return reigning PBC Runner of the Year Kyndal Boykin, senior Kendra Dorn, junior Savannah Fornshell and sophomores Lea Tardanico, Olivia Lowman and Catherine George. Ormsby brings in track and field mid-distance runner Brittany McGilberry, along with Julie Sem, who last competed for the Braves in 2012.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Coming off a third place finish at the Peach Belt Conference Championships last year, the UNCP mens cross country team was picked to finish fourth by the league’s coaches in 2014, the league office announced Monday.
The Braves earned a total of 52 points. The tally was five points behind Flagler in third and two points ahead of Georgia College in fifth.
After GRU Augusta won the 2013 PBC title in a tie breaker with Columbus State, both teams are tied as the favorites in the preseason poll with 75 points, while Armstrong, Clayton State, Young Harris, Montevallo and Francis round out the order from sixth to 10th, respectively.
Under the direction of new head cross country coach Peter Ormsby, the Braves welcome back reigning Freshman of the Year Wilson Pearson and all-conference runner Joel Johnston. Also returning are seniors Nick Tamburo and Andrew Nguyen, as well as juniors Matt Reith, Tyler Moore and Nebiyou Aynu. Ormsby brings in track and field mid-distance runners Jamar Davis and Jordan Wilson to the squad along with nine newcomers – one transfer and eight freshmen – to the Black and Gold for the 2014 season.
