To the Editor,
I am writing today regarding personal influences Owen Thomas, a candidate for Lumberton City Council, has had on the students of Lumberton High School. In 2015, Thomas assisted in chartering the LSHS Key Club. The Lumberton High School Key Club members perform acts of service in their communities, such as roadside cleanup, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels. The Lumberton High School Key Club services a diverse population of students. Students from varying ethnicities, religious backgrounds, economic statuses, and ages; however, they all come together for one purpose, community involvement.
Owen is hands-on when it comes to student involvement. He is there at the majority of events and when he is available attends club meetings. One student at Lumberton High School who struggled making friends used Key Club as an outlet for social involvement. They describe Mr. Thomas as energetic, welcoming, and a role model for all Key Clubbers. Another student who uses Key Club as a way to earn volunteer hours for the High School National Honors Society brags on the mentorship Mr. Thomas and his school faculty advisor have been when it came to their academic goals and college decisions that they have had to make this year during their senior year. Another student who struggled financially to pay club dues credits Mr. Thomas for finding donations so she would be able to participate. Mr. Thomas has been an inspiration to many students at Lumberton High School and I would highly recommend anyone to support him in his campaign efforts.
