When:

Where:

Lumberton,

Description:

LUMBERTON — Usually a daughter will follow in her parents’ footsteps, but the roles reversed when Kenny Biggs decided to participate in the Dancing with the Robeson County Stars, a fundraiser for the United Way. Biggs, a lifelong resident of Lumberton, watched his daughter, Chelsea, dance to the benefit of the organization last year and figured he would take a couple of steps in that direction. “It looked like a lot of fun watching my daughter do it last year,” Biggs said. “It’s a challenge, but overall it’s helping out trying to get books in kids’ hands.” Biggs will be dancing with Jennifer Hickman, also a lifelong Lumberton resident. “I love practices, it’s fun. We have a good time …, ” Hickman said. “We’re probably not going to be the best dancers but were going to be entertaining.” The second annual dance event will be held on March 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Southeastern Agricultural Center and Farmers Market. The United Way asks people to support their favorite couple by voting with a $10 donation. The couple with the most votes will win the competition. Proceeds from votes, as well as ticket sales, go toward the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a program established in 1996 by the country singer that provides a free book monthly to children 5 and under, regardless of family income. Tickets are $30 each. The event raised $146,000 last year, and hopes are high that the numbers will be the same if not better this time around. “I think it’s wonderful. Sandra Oliver and United Way have just done a fabulous job,” Hickman said. “When you have people standing in line at 5:30 in the morning for the event and tickets are sold out in a matter of minutes — the event sold out before I could get a table for my family — that is just great.” There are 10,000 children 5 years old and younger eligible for the program, and only 1,300 children who are receiving books. Registration forms to receive free books are available at the Lumberton Children’s Clinic at 400 Liberty Hill Road and the United Way office at 202 N. Chestnut St. For information, or to vote for your favorite couple, visit www.unitedwayrobeson.org.
