‘Looking for Ms. Locklear’ screens Saturday
PEMBROKE — Growing up in Harnett County, Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal met in Lenore Locklear’s first grade class. In 2006, they decided to find the woman they called Ms. Locklear.
“We choose not to use the Internet or the telephone, but instead to rely on face-to-face contact with people,” they wrote on their Web site.
A documentary titled “Looking for Ms. Locklear” resulted from the search. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Saturday at Givens Performing Arts Center on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Tickets are $5. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. To purchase tickets or for information, call (910) 521-6361 or send an e-mail haladayj@uncp.edu.
Part of the footage was shot in the Pembroke area and includes interviews with members of the Lumbee tribe. Some of the Lumbee Indians who spoke with McLaughlin and Neal will attend the screening. The filmmakers will also be present to perform songs from the film.
Before the film begins, UNCP photographer Raul Rubiera will take portraits of Lumbees for his photo-documentary project.
The film won the 2008 Southern Lens Award from South Carolina Public Television and was shown at the North Carolina Museum of History for Native American Heritage Month.
