LUMBERTON — Two Robeson County men were charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Maxton man in his home in September, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Calube Wayne Dial, 21, of 48 Cherub Drive in Maxton, was charged with first-degree murder, discharging a weapon into occupied property and larceny of a firearm, according to sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch.
Ronnie Lowery Lee Jr., 21, of 93 Reservation Road in Shannon, was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, Branch said.
Each was placed in the Robeson County jail without bond.
Dial and Lee are accused of killing 21-year-old Terry Levonte McLauchlin in his home on McGirt Gin Road in the early hours of Sept. 8, Branch said. McLauchlin was found in the doorway of his single-wide mobile home with a single gunshot wound, Branch said.
The shooting was reported by McLaughlin ’s girlfriend, Carla Bullard, 29, of Red Springs. Bullard told investigators that McLaughlin was playing a video game in the living room when he heard someone walk onto the front porch.
Branch said the front door to the home was open but the screen door was closed. According to the report, McLaughlin said to an unidentified man, “Boy, what are you doing on my porch?”
Bullard said McLaughlin told her to get down on the floor as he attempted to crawl to the front door to close it, at which point she heard a gunshots.
She crawled into a bathroom and remained there until the gunfire stopped, then ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911.
Bullard’s two children, ages 8 and 6, were in a bedroom on the front side of the house but were not injured, Branch said.
Branch credited the arrest of the men to “a lot of leg work” from Lt. Reggle Strickland and Detective Forrest Obershea, with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshals Service.
