RALEIGH — Gov. Beverly Perdue has appointed a Lumberton realtor to her newly formed Judicial Nominating Commission.
The governor announced the appointment of Elliott Williamson, owner of Century 21 Real Estate Center, to the 18-member commission last week.
Williamson is a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves as president of the Lumberton Association of Realtors.
“It’s quite an honor to have been appointed to this commission,” Williamson said. “It’s going to be a very challenging and interesting experience.”
Williamson, 58, said that he has always had an interest in the legal system, having been a pre-law student in college and now having a brother, sister and and brother-in-law who are all attorneys.
He was recommended to serve a two-year term on the commission by a local attorney, he said.
“There are an amazing bunch of people serving on this commission,” Williamson said. “Eight members are not involved in law, and are ‘civilians’ as they like to call us. We were brought in so there would be a different mix of people outside of the law.”
The commission will review applications when vacancies occur on the state Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, or Superior Court. Members will select three nominees to fill a vacancy, with the governor appointing one of the three commission-selected nominees.
Williamson said that the commission is expected to hold its first meeting next week. The session will be held to provide a public forum and develop the rules by which the commission will operate.
