PEMBROKE — Two candidates, an incumbent and a newcomer, filed Tuesday to run for seats on the Lumbee Tribal Council.
The incumbent is Audrey Revels Hunt, who is seeking her second term as a District 1 representative. District 1 includes the Gaddys, Rowland, Orrum, Sterlings, Whitehouse and Thompson communities.
“I am seeking re-election because I want to continue to represent all of District 1 and ensure that services are available to all of the areas of District 1,” Hunt said in a statement. “I have been very active in my representation and want to continue to see that my district receives fair treatment when it comes to services.”
Hunt is an educator. She attends Fairpoint Freewill Baptist Church and serves on the state Education Advisory Commission.
She is married to Larece Hunt and has a daughter, Amber Chavis, a son, Paul Chavis, and a grandson.
The second candidate to file Tuesday is Leroy “Pete” Butler. He is running for the first time to represent District 10, which includes Shannon, Rennert and South St. Pauls.
“ I believe the desire I have to serve people, and the concern I have for all that would benefit from the services of the Lumbee Tribe, makes me eligible for the District 10 seat on the Lumbee Tribal Council,” Butler said in a statement. “I promise to work for the interest of all people in the three communities. I will focus on services for the elderly and youth, as well as housing and economic development.”
Butler, 69, is a veteran of the armed forces. Heretired from Butler’s Tire Service of Baltimore. He currently attends Elizabeth Heights Baptist Church.
Butler is married to Cherry Strickland-Butler. They have three daughters, Wanda, Dana and Christina.
Filings for the Nov. 17 elections continues until Sept. 11.
