PEMBROKE — This Christmas a group of students from the Public Schools of Robeson County has a gift for its audiences.

Studio One will be presenting “The Littlest Angel” — a musical based on the children’s book by Charles Tazewell — at Givens Performing Arts Center Thursday through Sunday.

“I think it’s a great chance to relax from the stress of shopping and just enjoy an event with your family,” said Jeanne Koonce, the director of the show. “There’s stuff for everybody.”

The show will start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for seniors, $13 for adults and $7 for students. For reservations or tickets, call the GPAC box office at (910) 521-6361.

The two-hour show tells the story of a new angel who transforms from a heavenly pest to a remarkable angel with his humble gift to the newborn Christ child. The first act will be the musical retelling of the story, while the second act will be a “musical Christmas gift from Studio One,” Koonce said.

Characters from the Peanuts gang will make a visit during the second act.

Before the show, a band of students in the school system will play Christmas music in the lobby. They will also play during intermission.

“Rather than a big band coming, these students got together,” Koonce said. “They just wanted to play.”

Koonce said the show will feature a variety of music, from bluegrass to jazz, to big sacred pieces, all themed toward winter and Christmas.

More than 30 actors are involved in the play, along with about 20 band members. All are students.

“It’s literally one of the biggest companies I’ve ever put together,” Koonce said. “And I’ve been doing this job for over 20 years.”

Koonce said the show will feature new talent.

“We had a huge turnout in audition for younger talent,” Koonce said. “Normally Studio operates the older crew, the high schoolers, but I had a lot of younger students. We have a real opportunity to show some brand new talent that’s never been seen before.”

The show’s leading roles will feature Chenoa Chavis as the Littlest Angel; Ryan Ransom as the Understanding Angel; Shawn Lowry as the Heavenly Messenger; Kaitlin Davis as the Holy Halosmith; Cierra Chavis as the Golden Gatekeeper; Kenda Hunt as the Angel of Music; and Taylor Thomas as the Divine Designer.

“It’s inspirational and light and joyous,” Koonce said. “Nothing heavy. ... So that the audience could just take a deep breath. As Linus says, ‘Charlie Brown, that is what Christmas is all about.’”
