FAIRMONT — Fairmont football coach Barry Leonard submitted his resignation Thursday afternoon. Leonard’s resignation will become official after it is reviewed and processed by the Robeson County school board on Jan. 12.

“He (Leonard) cited wanting to spend more time with his family,” Fairmont principal C. Jason Suggs said. “I was a little shocked because things are going in the right direction, but I understand his reasons.”

Leonard led the Golden Tornadoes to a conference title this season and earned coach of the year laurels from the Three Rivers Conference and The Robesonian.

Smart move Barry. You resigned while at the top of your game. Now all the nay-sayers can only remember you for the accomplishments you made in your final year of coaching.
