LAURINBURG — John Haskins said defense will be the driving force behind his team's success this season.
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke women's basketball team limited St. Andrews to just 30 percent shooting from the field in breezing to a 91-55 victory Tuesday night at Harris Court.
The 91 points were the most for UNCP since defeating North Florida 95-88 in overtime on March 4, 2003.
"The beginning of the half, through the four-minute mark, I thought we were pretty solid," Haskins said of his team's defense. "Once we got a 15-point lead, we relaxed a little bit. We were able to get some great shots off today, as did St. Andrews, and we are going to keep working on getting better."
The Knights (0-1) had three stretches in the game of more than 3 1/2 minutes when they were held scoreless. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the game's first two minutes, St. Andrews didn't score again until the 14:30 mark of the first half on Natia Gasque's jumper to cut the UNCP lead to 7-6.
After Gasque's field goal, the Knights were shutdown until Gasque connected on one of two free throws with 8:43 left in the half, as the Braves built a 19-7 advantage.
The Braves (2-0) led 40-28 at halftime and opened the second half with a 9-0 run, until Gasque hit two free throws at the 16:38 mark.
For the second straight game, former East Bladen star JaToya Kemp led the way for the Braves. The junior scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Kemp was an one-person show and broke open the game for the Braves in the second half. With UNCP leading 55-41, Kemp scored the next 11 points in a 14-0 run for the Braves. Kemp connected on two free throws, hit a jumper, jumped into the passing lane for a steal, a layup and a free throw for an old-fashion three-point play all in the matter of 40 seconds.
Senior Casey Siddens came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points and connected on 4-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.
"I felt pretty good during warm-ups," Siddens said about her shooting touch. "Coach (Haskins) said they were going to layoff of us from the outside."
Haskins was pleased to see Siddens have a big game in a reserve role.
"Casey was a breakthrough shooter coming off the bench and when she came off the court I told her that is what we recruited her for," he said.
Despite his team cruising to its second road win of the season, Haskins sees areas where his team needs to improve.
"We had too many self-inflicted turnovers," Haskins said. "We have to eliminate them, especially as we get into Peach Belt Conference play. We can't be shooting ourselves in the foot."
UNCP returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday in the Mars Hill Classic against the host before facing Lenior-Rhyne at 4 p.m. Saturday.
