LUMBERTON — Work to repair a section of a concrete barrier on the Carthage Road bridge that was damaged in a single-car accident last week has been delayed until tonight, according to Chuck Miller, resident engineer at the Department of Transportation.

The repairs to the 30-foot-section of the Carthage Road bridge at Interstate 95 that was knocked out when a car struck it on Friday were scheduled to begin Monday night but the Transportation Department was not able to coordinate traffic control for closure of the bridge and the west side of I-95’s southbound lane, Miller said.

Miller said the supervisor of the Bridge Maintenance Division, Tim Everette, told him that it also took longer than he had originally estimated to get materials lined up for the project. According to Miller, the repairs are still expected to be completed by the end of the week.

A metal guardrail and a “triton” rail, which is plastic and filled with water, have been in place as temporary barriers since Friday’s accident during which a passenger car struck the barrier, sending chunks of broken concrete onto I-95. No one was injured seriously in the wreck. A car traveling I-95 was damaged when it hit debris that fell onto the major highway.
