LUMBERTON — Campbell Soup Company on Monday provided some nourishment for students hungry for an education, donating $20,000 that the Robeson Community College Foundation will use to fund scholarships.
The college in exchange will name a conference room at the brand new Workforce Development Center at RCC after the renowned maker of soups.
Mark Cacciatore, senior director of operations at the Campbell Soup Company facility in Maxton, presented the check to the foundation.
“Supporting education is at the core of supporting the community,” he said.
Cacciatore presented the check to Don Metzger, a Lumberton city councilman and foundation board member.
The money will specifically go a Robeson Community College Foundation capital campaign called “Opening Doors, Changing Lives.” The campaign goal is to raise $1 million to go toward scholarships and the college’s endowment.
Metzger said the foundation has raised nearly half of its goal.
“Of course, with the economy, it’s slowed a little bit but we aren’t giving up,” he said.
There will be a plaque recognizing the company placed outside the conference room. The company’s logo will be placed on a wall inside the room.
“They are, in general, just a great corporate citizen,” said Charles Chrestman, president of the community college..
Foundation Director Ericka Jones extended thanks to Cacciatore and Campbell Soup for the donation and for “recognizing the importance of providing scholarships for our students.”
The Workforce Development Center, which is nearing completion, will house a biology agricultural center, industrial services, a small business development center, human resource development, occupational extension, and the office of the vice president for Adult and Continuing Education.
Campbell Soup Company has been a large employer in Robeson County for 27 years. It currently has 850 full time employees.
One of those employees, Warren Westbury, who’s worked at Campbell 25 years, also teaches a computer course at RCC.
“I think it’s wonderful Campbell Soup made this donation. The college constantly needs to expand,” Westbury said.
Metzger, employing the famous Campbell slogan, accepted the check and said, “There is one last thing I’d like to say and that’s ‘M’m! M’m! Good!’”
