LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man led police on a high-speed chase Tuesday evening that ended when the driver smashed his vehicle hit a tree.

Charles Pridgen, 40, of Sanchez Drive, ran from the police when they tried to serve warrants for traffic violations and not paying child support, according to sheriff’s Maj. Randy McGirt.

The 20-minute chase started on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway at about 5 p.m. and proceeded to N.C. 41 South toward Fairmont and then left on Old Stage Road. McGirt said the chase went on for seven miles at speeds of up to 80 mph before Pridgen crashed into a tree on Merritt Road in Fairmont.

No one was injured in the wreck, according to McGirt.

Pridgen was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of injury to personal property, possession of drugs, non-payment of child support, fleeing to elude arrest, failure to yield to blue lights and sirens, driving while license revoked and speeding, according to McGirt.
