LUMBERTON — Lumberton’s National Night Out, scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the downtown plaza, has been blown away by the threat of inclement weather.
Connie Russ, downtown coordinator for the city of Lumberton, announced the annual event has been canceled in a statement this morning.
“It is a national event and today is that national recognition,” said Russ. “We can’t have it today, so we won’t reschedule.”
According to the National Weather Service, Lumberton could receive up to an inch of rain by Wednesday morning, with a thunderstorm likely before 10 tonight.
Russ said the band scheduled to play at the event, Big Daddy Drive, “cannot set up in the rain.”
“We encourage people to support other neighboring communities,” she said.
The following Robeson County towns will hold National Night Out events as scheduled at the following times and locations:
Red Springs at 6 p.m. at Tom Cope Park; Maxton from 6 p.m. at Beacham Park; Fairmont at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Center.
The national celebration was created in order to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, and to build support and participation in local anti-crime programs. Each town’s event will feature children’s activities as well as fire and police exhibits.

Can't reschedule as tied to a national observance?
Then why, pray tell, are the 4th of July fireworks not on July 4 but on a more convenient day?
Excuses, excuses, excuses.
We have the Carolina Civic Center.
But neither of those could host the band?
____
Why is it that my first reaction was that it was not a matter of weather, but of whether they had enough vendors who wanted to come?
____
If other towns, under the same threat of weather are still holding their Night Out, why is Lumberton turning tale and running?
Excuses, excuses, excuses.
