LUMBERTON — A 31-year-old Lumberton man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Friday morning.

According to Trooper M.J. Miles of the state Highway Patrol, Timothy Earl Jacobs, of 2427 Pittman Road, was driving at 75 mph — 20 mph over the speed limit — and was not wearing a seat belt when the deadly accident happened.

Miles said that Jacobs was driving a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck west on Old Allenton Road about three miles southeast of Lumberton when he wrecked while trying to make a right-hand turn. The vehicle ran off the road to the left, Jacobs over-corrected, the vehicle then exited the road to the right, struck a fence post, continued traveling and hit a utility pole.

Jacobs was thrown from the vehicle, which came to rest upside down, pinning him underneath. Jacobs, who was traveling alone, died at the scene.

The accident was reported at 9:09 a.m. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $4,000.
