LUMBERTON — Students can see their homework come to life when Scout Finch, Atticus and Jem take the stage Friday at the Carolina Civic Center.
The Burning Coal Theater Company of Raleigh will perform a stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” at 7 p.m.
“This an opportunity to see one of the premier theater troupes in the state performing an absolute classic that also happens to be taught in the curriculum at all levels, so students will be able to gain a real multi-dimensional understanding of the work they are reading in class,” said Richard Sceiford, the executive director of the Carolina Civic Center.
Students with a current ID will get half-price tickets, which are $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased from 1 to 5 p.m. until Friday at the administrative offices at the theater, or by calling (910) 738-4339. The box office opens one hour before the performance.
“As they have done in the last two years, and this is a really cool thing, after the show, the actors bring chairs out on stage and they do a question-and-answer session with the audience,” Sceiford said.
While the show is family-friendly, the language used in the novel is part in the show.
“It is an adaptation of the novel, which means that like the novel, the N-word is used but that’s part of the novel and the story that’s being told. So people must realize they will hear that word.”
The 90-minute show has local significance.
“It is a story about racial issues and overcoming racial issues, which of course has resonance in the South for everyone it is part of the shared heritage,” Sceiford said.
