RED SPRINGS — Lackadaisical.
This is how Flora Macdonald forward Luke Cothron described his team's play against Upper Room Thursday afternoon at the Flora Macdonald Gymnasium in the first round of the fifth annual David Currie Classic.
Behind 29 points by Andres Gentry and 22 from Cothron, Flora Macdonald Academy rallied to knock off Upper Room Academy 78-65.
"I think for the first two quarters, we looked like a team that didn't want to be out here," Flora Macdonald coach Derrick Bond said.
After a basket by Upper Room's Tyrek Coger extended his team's lead to 47-39 with 3:29 left in the third quarter, Flora Macdonald's Gentry and Cothron responded. Gentry and Cothron combined to score the 14 straight points over the next three minutes to turn the game around.
Gentry started the run with a runner in the lane. After a missed shot by Upper Room, Gentry drained a 3-pointer from the left wing. Cothron added a follow-up bucket to trim the Upper Room advantage to 47-46.
The Cougars (4-2) took the lead for good on another Gentry 3-pointer. Cothron and Gentry each added an offensive putback to stretch the Flora Macdonald lead to 53-47, before Rodney Purvis' layup for Upper Room stopped the run.
"I felt like I had to do something because Luke and our point guard (Jerome Seagars) were struggling a little bit," said Gentry. "We tried to run with them instead of playing a half-court game."
Cothron agreed the Cougars were too anxious on the offensive end.
"We came down and shot a bunch of 3-pointers," the N.C. State verbal commitment said. "We were playing against a smaller team, we needed to be patient."
Flora Macdonald opened the game with a 8-3 lead behind the play of Seagers, who had two 3-pointers and a dunk. Upper Room chipped away at the lead and jumped ahead on a 3-point field goal by Taajae Bailey.
"We were looking forward to this game since the preseason," Upper Room coach Avie Lester said. "We kind of targeted this game. I thought we played well against one of the top teams in the state."
