To the Editor,

I am a citizen of Robeson County who does not live within any city limits. For the last eight weeks or so, I have been awakened by the neighbor’s dog virtually each and every day. I work evenings and usually go to sleep around 4 a.m.

The lack of sleep I’m getting due to the incessant yelping of this dog is causing me physical illness, not to mention how tired I am getting while doing my job. I tried to talk to my neighbor about this issue in the past with another dog and he told me to sleep with ear plugs. Nice guy.

So this time around I turned to the Sheriff’s Office for assistance. A deputy told me the dog has more of a right to bark than the right I have to live on my own property in peace. I asked what would happen to me if I “disposed” of the dog myself, since I basically have no other alternative if I ever want to get a good night’s sleep. He excitedly told me I would be arrested and sent to jail.

I thanked him for being so helpful and hung up. Boy, I’m sure glad my tax dollars are going to help pay the salaries of such concerned law enforcement officials.

What exactly do you want them to do? Kill the dog? Take it away? You live out in the country. People in the country own dogs. Dogs like barking during the day (night, too). Sleeping with ear plugs might not be such a bad idea.

Apparently the "Officials" and others need to read the Robeson County Ordinance/Regulations pertaining to animals in Robeson County!! It clearly states if a dog continues barking for 20-30 minutes, it is considered a nuisance (??) and it's time to check - also time to issue a "CITATION" ... that is what should be done and if it were done in the proper manner, you can be assured most people would adhere and check on their dogs when barking that long. It is amazing how many people have dogs and apparently do not realize (or care) that barking is their only way to communicate (barking is their voice) - when they bark, they are attempting to tell us something and certainly after barking for 20-30 minutes, there is obviously a problem of some type; people who ignore their dogs in this manner do NOT need to have a dog, and as most of us know, way too many people in Robeson County ONLY have dogs as a cheap alarm system -- how sad and how unfortunate - THOSE people are the ones who need to be tied in the back yard on a chain and left 24-7 and let them see what it's like -- I would love to be the one to chain some of them and walk away and let them think for a while; also, dogs are horrified of storms and many break loose, run away and never return. If people cannot take the time to educate themselves about animals, they do NOT need to have animals -- they have feelings the same as "humans" and, as I have said many times, animals are NOT "property or trash" as so many in Robeson County seem to think - as far as I'm concerned, those who feel that way are the ones who should be considered "property/trash!

Also, no one should have to wear ear plugs to be able to sleep -- what needs to be done is give the "owner" a CITATION and force them to care for their dog or adopt it to someone who cares and will take care of it.

Once again -- GIVE THE IRRESPONSIBLE OWNER(S) A CITATION" - make them pay the price for their negligence of not caring for the animal properly.

ATTENTION COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT: "READ THE RULES/REGULATIONS FOR ANIMALS IN ROBESON - IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO WRITE A CITATION - THE ANSWER CERTAINLY IS NOT TO PUNISH THE DOG MORE.
