LUMBERTON — Beginning Monday, the Division of Social Services is accepting applications for its Low Income Energy Assistance Program.

To qualify, the applicant must be directly responsible for the heating bills, and the household income must be at or below 110 percent of the poverty level. For example, a one-person household’s income cannot exceed $993, a four-person household’s income can’t exceed $2,022, a 10-person household’s income can’t exceed $4,079, and so on.

The application is period is through Nov. 13.

For information, call the Robeson County Department of Social Services at (910) 671-3500 or (800) 662-7030.

I'm a single parent who worked to put myself thorugh college while raising two small children.I've worked hard over the years to get to where I'm at today. Due to my income - which I'm very thankful for -I don't qualify for "anything free" and I'm thankful that I don't. With social programs to help people - we have to help the "greedy" to make sure the needy are taken care of. If the quidelines to social programs are too strict - it would keep alot of people who need it "out". And on that note, always remember most of us are just a paycheck away from being "out on the streets" and most people with low income didn't choose to live that way...

Why is it year after year these same people continue to get free this and free that?.... What about a little bit of love spread around to the tax payers of this county. You know we have needs and wants too. Like my son 16, needs new tires on his '09 mustang because he works 4 nights a week and all those miles back and forth to work have eroaded the rubber.(we don't require him to buy his own gas or tires or pay for the maintenance on his ride). My daughter, 12 was a little over budget on the fund raiser she planned for our neighbor who's house burned. So me and my neighbors kicked in to help her. Not that we need anything free.....but it sure would be nice if the people on the other side of the "volunteers table" (the ones with the paper plates held out) to remember us every now and then and maybe give up 1 or 2 of those beers and drop an unused scratchoff lottery ticket or a couple of bucks in a mailbox in front of a nice home with a nice expensive car in the driveway... and you know what,?... we would even say "thankyou".
