FAIRMONT — A Fairmont man was killed outside of his Harrington Road home early Sunday, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
John Ross Kissam, 29, of 533 Harrington Road, was shot in his front yard at about 12:08 a.m. after agreeing to drive a man to Rowland, according to Sheriff Kenneth Sealey. Tracy Parnell, who lived next door to Kissam with Kissam’s father, called 911 after hearing multiple shots.
Kissam was struck more than once, Sealey said.
A female who was inside the home at the time told investigators that a unidentified man knocked on Kissam’s front door, told Kissam he was out of gas and asked Kissam for a ride to the nearby town, Sealey said. Kissam went inside to change clothes, came back outside, and had taken a few steps when he was shot, according to Sealey.
“We don’t have any description, other than he was a young male,” he said.
Kissam and the woman had just returned home after visiting a racetrack in South Carolina when Kissam answered the door, Sealey said. He did not want to release her name.
Deputies from the Homicide and Major Crimes divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation are leading the investigation, Sealey said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3100.
In an unrelated case, the findings of an investigation in the death of a 4-year-old in Pembroke have been turned over to the District Attorney’s office.
“I feel sure there will be charges filed,” Sealey said.
Dustin Oxendine, of a mobile home park at 65 Allendale Drive, was pronounced dead at his home on Thursday after emergency personnel responded to a 911 call placed by the child’s mother, 28-year-old Jessica Oxendine. A deputy saw bruises “about the boy’s body,” Sealey said.
Dustin, and another child, a 7-year-old, were at home with a 16-year-old babysitter at the time, Sealey said. Oxendine, who was not at home, dialed 911 after one of the children called to tell her Dustin was not breathing, Sealey said.
