“Oh man it’s great for the kids, having that on homecoming, they haven’t won a homecoming in three years or so,” South Robeson coach Stephen Roberson said. “It’s great for the seniors, the’ve really been a good class.”
The two teams, who gritted to a 6-6 tie in regulation, traded punches in overtime as Kalvis Chavis provided the the Mustangs’ scoring with touchdown runs of 2 and 10 yards. Chavis stepped in at quarterback in the second half after starter Daquinn Lindsey suffered a shoulder sprain in the first half.
Oxendine split the uprights in the third overtime and the South Robeson (3-5, 1-2) defense stood their ground to cement their first conference win since 2009. South Robeson finished with 203 rushing yards, led by Anthony Brown who had an 87 yard touchdown run on a fake punt in the first half.
E. Columbus 60, St. Pauls 18
LAKE WACCAMAW — Defensive struggles and turnover woes made for St. Pauls lop-sided 60-18 Three Rivers Conference loss to East Columbus on Friday night.
The Bulldogs (6-3, 1-2) were put on the ropes early, giving up a whopping 34 points to the Gators (5-4, 2-1) in the first quarter alone to fall behind 34-12 after one. East Columbus benefited from back-to-back fumble recoveries in the first that led to touchdown returns of 36 and 29 yards from Jeremy Rouse and LJ Little.
The Gators cashed in on a third fumble recovery in the fourth. Nick McClure led East Columbus with three touchdown runs. St. Pauls Kane Banner finished 9-for-22 passing for 131 yards with a touchdown and no picks. He provided a 4-yard scoring run and a 26-yard touchdown pass to Javon Crawford in the first. Shawn Williams, who had 137 yards on 24 carries, rounded out the Bulldogs’ scoring with a 9-yard run.
Pinecrest 20, Purnell Swett 7
PEMBROKE — Pinecrest quarterback Dwayne Simpson was too much for Purnell Swett as the Rams fell 20-7 in a Southeastern Conference game Friday in Pembroke.
Swett squandered a 7-0 fourth-quarter lead as the Patriots’ Simpson ran wild with a pair of 24-yard touchdown runs and a 46-yard touchdown pass. Simpson ran for 135 yards on 23 carries and flung for 166 yards on 11-of-17 passing. The Rams failed to convert a first down in the second half.
“Our defense just got exhausted and we just couldn’t get a first down,” Swett coach Mark Heil said.
Chuck Oxendine had a team-high 51 yards rushing for the Rams who drop to 0-3 in the SEC and 2-6 overall.
