LUMBERTON — If it’s been a while since you’ve laced up the sneakers for a run, Saturday’s Chevy to the Levee is a chance to jog your memory and get back on track. But if your pace is slower, there will be plenty of more relaxing activities at Luther Britt Park.
“Exercising in green spaces and parks, such as Luther Britt Park, can decrease tension and depression and can greatly improve one’s mental health,” said Scott Billingsley, president of the Robeson Road Runners, a local group of runners, walkers, cyclists triathletes.
The Robeson Road Runners, the city of Lumberton and Lumberton Chevrolet sponsor the Chevy to the Levee, a day of physical fitness featuring a 5K race at 9 a.m, a 50K bike ride at 10 a.m., and a free one mile “fun run” at 10:30 a.m. Gates open and registration begins at 8 a.m.
The bike ride, which is new to the event, features a 31-mile tour through parts of Lumberton and Robeson County.
The cost to enter the 5K or bike ride is $35 each, and $60 to enter both. A portion of the proceeds raised from entry fees will go to local charities.
“This year’s beneficiary is a brand new program to Robeson County called Girls on Track, which teaches life skills and physical fitness to girls in grades sixth through eighth,” Billingsley said. “Students at Littlefield Middle School participate in a 10-week program that prepares them to deal with the social and emotional challenges of being a young teenage girl, and it trains them to run a 5K race.”
The event will also feature canoe and paddle boat rides, music, food and a free kids’ zone, all available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We are also introducing a chicken bog sale,” Billingsley said. “The proceeds of which will benefit the Lumberton Youth Baseball Association.”
The forecast for Saturday is sunny with highs in the upper 60s.
“This is one of Lumberton’s premiere community events,” Billingsley said, “It looks like Saturday will be a beautiful, sunny autumn day — not too hot and not too cold — where folks can come out to run, walk or ride and enjoy all that Luther Britt Park has to offer.”
