TRENTON — Fairmont’s intestinal fortitude was tested for the third consecutive week and this time, the Golden Tornadoes made enough plays down the stretch to come out victorious.

Fairmont snapped a two-game losing skid Friday night at Jones Senior with a second-half comeback, erasing a 14-point deficit to take out the Trojans, 28-20.

After taking a 22-20 lead late in the third quarter, Fairmont sealed the deal on 4th-and-6 in the red zone with 1:15 left when Jarrod Neal found sophomore Cedrique Baldwin in the flats for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Baldwin made a defender miss at the 5 and bounced his way into the end zone.

“I’m really proud of the kids for not giving up and playing well in the second half,” Fairmont coach James Atkinson said. “We had a couple big runs and big catches and stopped them on defense when we had to. We came together.”

Up next for the three-time defending Three Rivers Conference champions is the league opener at South Robeson. Four suspended starters will return to the field next week against the Mustangs.

“It’s a brand new season and we’re excited,” Atkinson said. “We’ll take same approach as we do every day. Just get better.”
