LAKE WACCAMAW — East Columbus scored a touchdown a piece in the third and fourth quarters of Friday's 21-6 win against South Robeson.
The Mustangs' all-purpose player Avis Johnson put his team on the board in the first half with a touchdown run, but it was not enough against the Gator's unique run offense.
South Robeson head coach Chris Simpson knew stopping the run would be key for his team.
"We prepared this week to stop it," Simpson said, "but we just couldn't do it in the second half."
Johnson led the way for South Robeson, totaling 76 yards on seven carries and scoring his team's only touchdown.
Simpson felt his team put forth a good effort in the game, but the lack of offense eventually wore down his defense.
"Only putting six on the board hurts. We just left our defense out there too long."
The Gators finish the regular season at 5-5 with a 4-1 Three Rivers Conference record, but missed out on the chance at a conference championship with Fairmont's win Friday.
South Robeson has their two-game win streak come to an end, finishing their regular season 4-7 and 2-3 in conference play.
Both teams are in the state playoffs, with the full bracket to be released later today.
