Harold Thrower Sr.

RED SPRINGS — Harold Monroe Thrower Sr., 89, of Red Springs and Raeford, died Feb. 13, 2013.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Philadelphus Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Mike McGehee officiating. Burial will follow in the Alloway Cemetery.

Thrower was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Red Springs, the youngest son of the late Fairley and Pearl Currie Thrower. He was a graduate of Red Springs High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During World War II he attended the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Rhode Island, and later served in the Army Air Forces.

Thrower was the owner and proprietor of Thrower’s General Store for more than half a century. An elder at Philadelphus Presbyterian Church for many years, he was the author of “The History of Raft Swamp and Philadelphus Presbyterian Churches,” which received an award from the North Carolina Presbyterian Historical Society. He was a dedicated local historian, an occasional columnist for the Red Springs Citizen, a farmer, and a private pilot.

Thrower was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jane Brown Thrower.

He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth T. Kane of Red Springs and Marie Thrower and her husband Charles Rowe of Charleston, S.C.; his son, Harold “Hal” Thrower Jr. and his wife Janet of Raeford; a grandson, Graham Rowe of Chandler, Ariz.; and a stepgrandson, Miles Rowe of Durham.

The visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Crumpler Serenity Funeral Home, 220 E. Fourth Ave., Red Springs

Mary Sanderson

PEMBROKE —Mary A. Sanderson (nee Lowry)—Entered into God’s rest suddenly on Feb. 4, 2013, found by friends at her home in Pembroke.

The Rev. Steven Locklear will officiate a special honor of life service 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Airy Baptist Church in Pembroke. Burial will follow immediately at Lowry Cemetery in Pembroke.

She came into this world on March 06, 1921, in Robeson County. She was the daughter of the late Mary Margaret Lowry and Sam Woodell.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Sanderson Sr.; and her beloved son, James C. Sanderson Jr.

She is survived by seven grandchildren, Victoria Chew (nee Sanderson) and husband Wayne of Broadway, Wendy Tucker (nee Sanderson) and husband Wade of Midland, James Sanderson, Alex Sanderson and wife Theresa, Jacquelyn Sanderson and Justin Sanderson. In addition, she had a number of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She also had several half-brothers and half-sisters; and a number of relatives who were involved in her life; she was widely known to many, having numerous loving friends and acquaintances in North Carolina that fondly referred to her as Ms. Mary.

She was a retired school teacher, graduating with her degree from Pembroke University in the 1930s; teaching in New York and North Carolina, including a girl’s school in Buffalo, N.Y.

Mary worked faithfully for many years for causes of the Tuscarora Tribe in Pembroke. She also was an avid and skilled golfer, even into her elder years. In addition, she dedicated herself to her grandchildren, being loyal to their every need. She was widely known to many, having numerous friends and acquaintances in North Carolina that fondly referred to her as Ms. Mary.
