LUMBERTON — Victoria Hunt and Greg Bryant will dance for literacy at the Robeson County Dancing with the Stars event.

“It’s a great opportunity to raise money for the kids of Robeson County,” said Bryant, a Robeson County real estate/ business developer.

Bryant calls himself a community activist who enjoys giving back to the youths of Robeson County.

“The audience can expect to see great performance,” Bryant said.

Hunt is a waitress at Linda’s Restaurant in Pembroke. She currently lives in Robeson County with her husband, Robert, and their two daughters, Alexa and Kara.

The second annual dance event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 23 at the Southeastern Agricultural Center and Farmers Market. The United Way event asks people to support their favorite couple by voting with a $10 donation. The couple with the most votes will win the competition.

Proceeds from votes, as well as ticket sales, go toward the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a program established in 1996 by country singer Dolly Parton that provides children 5 and under books each month regardless of their family income. Tickets are $30 each.

The event raised $146,000 last year, and hopes are high that the numbers will be better this time around.

There are 10,000 children 5 years old and younger eligible for the program in Robeson County. There are more than 1,300 children registered to receive books, a number that continues to grow.

Registration forms to receive books are available at the Lumberton Children’s Clinic at 400 Liberty Hill Road and the United Way office at 202 N. Chestnut St.

I just finished watching a news report here in Nashville that stated that the United States Postal Service no longer delivers the Imagination Library books here in middle Tennessee due to all the cut backs that were facing the postal service so in order for the books to be delivered the organization had to come up with the extra postage that the post office once covered. My question is this the same situation and is this the reason for the fundraisers?
