If you didn’t vote in Lumbee election, don’t complain later

To the Editor,

Brothers, sisters, friends and the Lumbee people, on Nov. 13, 4,899 members of the Lumbee Tribe decided the future for over 50,000 tribal members. These numbers tell me and the Lumbee government that the majority of our people really don’t care how our government is run or who is running it.

For all those who chose not to vote, you now have no reason to complain about how our government is run or any of the services that our government is supposed to provide to its members. You have nobody but yourselves to blame for any mistreatment or degrading remarks or looks that you might receive when trying to gain information or services from the tribal offices.

I will continue to support our government, no matter who is in charge. They were duly elected and are our leaders. We should support them in any way we can. We should also study our constitution and be prepared to take action if they violate it or the people’s trust. I personally want you all to be deeply in prayer for our government and our people.

We can’t let our culture be destroyed and lost once again. The only way around this is to be and remain a unified Lumbee people. Please reach out to a brother or sister on a daily basis and tell them that you love them and will be there for them.
