FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Former Purnell Swett star linebacker and Wingate University standout Kenwin Cummings was signed from the practice squad by the New York Jets on Monday, replacing cornerback Ahmad Carroll.
The moves came a day after New York lost to Jacksonville 24-22 on Josh Scobee's 21-yard field goal as time expired. Coach Rex Ryan said Carroll became expendable because undrafted free agent Marquice Cole had earned the spot on special teams.
"I think Cole has really taken his role," Ryan said. "I think he's done an outstanding job. That's not a slight to Carroll. It's just that I think this guy won the job and it's a chance for us to get Kenwin Cummings up."
Cummings was an undrafted free agent and spent most of the last two seasons on the Jets' practice squad.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pounder was named Purnell Swett's Athlete-of-the-Year in 2004 and earned First Team All-American honors at Wingate in 2005 and 2006.
