James Carl ‘J.C.’ Tyler

Lumberton

James Carl “J.C.” Tyler departed this life at home on Oct. 18, 2012, after an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cephus Tyler; his mother, Sadie Tyler Arnette; and a brother, Ned Albert Tyler.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Vivian Watkins Tyler; his daughter, Sarah “Randi” Tyler Turner and her husband David of Concord; his son, Nicholas Caleb Tyler and his wife Tiffany of Lumberton; his grandson, David Jackson Watkins Tyler of Lumberton; his granddaughter, Madison Claire Tyler of Lumberton; two sisters, Edna Tyler Wright of Fayetteville, and Mary Tyler Smith and her husband Jerry of Lumberton; three brothers, William F. “Bill” Tyler and his wife Janet of Asheboro, Carroll “Pete” Tyler of Granbury, Texas. and Kenneth W. “Kenny” Tyler of Little Rock, Ark.; and many nephews, nieces and extended family.

J.C. was born on Aug. 24, 1940, in the Broadridge Area. After graduating from high school at Littlefield, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country from 1958 to 1962. After leaving the service, he went to work at Lumberton Motors before taking a job with Toledo Carolina, Inc. He retired from Toledo Carolina in 2003 after 38 years of service. J.C. was a faithful member of East Lumberton Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for more than 40 years, served as church clerk for 40 years, and served as a deacon for 37 years. J.C. also helped serve as sound technician for church services for many years. Serving his church was one of his greatest joys. One of his other joys was assisting his wife, Mary Vivian, with preparing the yearly Christmas programs at the schools where she teaches.

J.C. was diagnosed with cancer on July 22, 2011. Rather than lie down in the face of his diagnosis, he went on as he called it “a journey chasing life.” He was able to walk the survivors’ lap at the 2012 Relay for Life alongside his wife.

The visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc. At other times, the family will receive visitors at their home.

A celebration of J.C.’s life will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at East Lumberton Baptist Church, the Rev. Richard Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in East Lumberton Baptist Church, a place very near and dear to J.C.
