Carolyn Janice Lowery Chavis, 61, of 409 Shannon Road, died Oct. 25, 2012, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Gardens of Faith Cemetery, the Rev. Kenneth Jones officiating.
Chavis was born in Robeson County on July 22, 1951, a daughter of the late Wesley and Sally Bell Lowery. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sharron Kay Lowery.
She is survived by her husband, Buford Chavis, Jr. of the home; two sons, Paul Chavis and Trent Chavis; three daughters, Paula Chavis, Darlene Chavis and Arlene Chavis; a brother, Earl Lowery; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Revels Funeral Home Lumberton.

H. Melvin Tyner

H. Melvin Tyner, born Oct. 27, 1914, died from complications of a heart and lung condition at Southeastern Regional Medical Center on Oct. 26, 2012.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Revels Funeral Home Chapel Lumberton. Burial will follow in Gardens of Faith Cemetery.
He was the son of Lora Mae Prevatt Tyner and Sandy Tyner. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Lorena Odum Tyner; a daughter, Judith; six brothers, Bunyan, Alton, Wilby, Herbert, Leon and Carrol; and two grandchildren, Daniel Locklear and Anita Whitcraft.
He is survived by five children; Lora Ann Tyner of Lumberton, Sandra Bullock and Dale, Ronald M. Tyner and Rose Ann of Gastonia, Jackie Tyner of the home, Richard Tyner and Gwen of Lumberton; a brother, Rev. Dr. Wayne Tyner ; 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Melvin had a love of farming but did public work the first part of his adult life. He served in the Civilian Construction Corps, then the Dey and Zimmerman Co., which built the first 500 mils of the Lumber River EMC line. He worked in several states as a live foreman putting up transition lines all the way to Maine.
He came back to Robeson County and started farming. He was very proud of his ability to raise good crops. He prided himself in his straight rows in the fields and many people would stop by to admire them. About 70 years of age he stopped work and took up his favorite hobbies of fishing and hunting, especially deer hunting. He killed his last deer at the age of 79. He continued his hobby and his last outing was turkey hunting when he was 95.
Melvin had many friends and family he grew up with in the Oak Grove Community. He was hones, trustworthy and a fair man that always treated everyone the same. His favorite words of advice were “if you can’t do it right don’t do it at all.”
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Revels Funeral Home Lumberton and other times at the home of his son, Ricky, 416 Bollinger Ave. Lumberton, N.C.

Jessie B. Locklear, 85, of1255 Indian Heritage Road, was born on Nov. 12,1926, and departed this life on Oct. 27, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Lumberton.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Biggs Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Romey Revels and Bishop Kenneth Locklear. Locklear will be laid to rest in Lumbee Memorial Gardens in Lumberton.
Locklear was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister, but more importantly she loved the Lord. She was a long standing member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Some of the things she enjoyed were family, cooking, fishing and traveling. She was born in Robeson County and was a loving daughter of the late Robert and Lizzie Graham Sampson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Lacy Locklear, a daughter-in-law Doris Locklear, four brothers, three sisters, a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
Locklear leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Lacy Locklear Jr. and wife Agnes and Tony Locklear, both of Lumberton; three daughters, Patsy A. Locklear and husband Cardell of Fayetteville, Linda Sampson-Locklear of Lumberton, and Sandra Akers of Quincy, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Biggs Funeral Home in Lumberton and at other times at the home, 1255 Indian Heritage Road in Lumberton.

Sarah Oxendine Sawyer, 89, of Elizabeth City, left those that loved and respected her peacefully in her home on Oct. 25, 2012.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m.Wednesday at New Hollywood Cemetery, Pastor Steve Hargrove officiating.
She was born in Lumberton on Nov. 2, 1922, but had made Elizabeth City her home for the past seventy-three years. Sawyer was the daughter of the late Jessie and Phodie Oxendine and was the wife of the late Barney Shelton “Shell” Sawyer. She attended St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Vera Hunt; two daughters, Sharon Hetherington and Gale Sawyer; three grandchildren, Van-Dee Hetherington, Chad White and Rachael Clark; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel.

Elise Bradshaw McKellar, 86, of Aberdeen, formerly of Red Springs, died Oct. 26, 2012, at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Red Springs, Rev. Bradley Boberg officiating. Burial will follow in the Alloway Cemetery.
She is survived by her sons, James Luther McKellar of Flat Woods, Ky. and Mark Steven McKellar of Kansas City, Mo; a daughter Susan McKellar Dellay of Aberdeen; two brothers Eddie Bradshaw and Norman Bradshaw both of Liverpool, England; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He is survived by three sons, Roger Lynn Gibson of Connecticut, Jimmy D. Gibson and Jessie L. Gibson, both of Maxton; three brothers, Gene Gibson of Oklahoma, Booby Gibson of Tennessee and Merlin Gibson of Germany; a sister, Carolyn Tebeau of Texas; seven grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

James Jimmy Roy Britt Jr., 85, of Bladenboro, died Oct. 27, 2012, in Bladenboro
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, the Rev. Bret Young officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery.
He is survived by his son, James C. Britt of Colorado; a brother, Harry B. Britt of Dover, Del.; and a sister, Nettie Sue Rainey of Darlington, S.C.
The visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
