To the Editor,

Our City Council and our Public Works Department are to be commended for their recent action to bring curbside recycling to Lumberton. My family has been faithful in separating and taking recyclable materials to the local collection point directly behind the Lumberton Rescue Station since its inception there, and for many years at the former recycling site on Bailey Road.

If we are to be good stewards of our environment, we must all pitch in and do our part. It will require a small amount of effort to separate and store newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, and other recyclables in the recycle container which will be provided to all the citizens of Lumberton who now receive garbage and yard waste pick-up services. The containers will be emptied every two weeks. The materials will then be taken to a site where they will be separated in to the appropriate categories and will “live to see another day” in some useful commodity for us and those who follow us. This makes much better sense economically as well as environmentally for our community and beyond.

The key for the success of curbside recycling is that all of our citizens be on board with this effort. Let’s all take the well being of our environment and efficient use of our resources seriously. Citizens of Lumberton unite and do your part!

William T. Gentry
