LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man who had been missing for a week was found shot dead in a Fifth Street auto shop on Monday after the shop owner admitted to killing the man during an argument over rent money, according to Lumberton police.

Hilton Oxendine Jr., 62, of Lumberton, was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Clarence Stephen Maynor, 63, according to Lumberton police Capt. Johnny Barnes. Oxendine was placed in the Robeson County jail without bond.

Oxendine told police that Maynor came to his shop, West Fifth Street Tire & Auto, on Feb. 20.

“They got into an argument over money and the lease, the argument turned to a shoving match, and Oxendine grabbed a handgun that he had there and shot him,” Barnes said. “… After he shot him, he left the body laying there right where he fell.”

Maynor was shot “more than once” in the “mid-section,” according to Barnes.

According to Barnes, Oxendine went to the Sheriff’s Office on Monday and told Maj. Howard Branch that Stephen Maynor’s body was inside the Fifth Street garage.

Maynor’s black 2007 Chevrolet Corvette was found parked inside the garage, Barnes said. A handgun was recovered at the scene, he said.

Maynor, who lived at Ocean Isle Beach but also maintained a home on Sherwood Road in Lumberton, was reported missing on Thursday by a co-worker. The co-worker had last spoken to Maynor on Feb. 20, doing so by telephone, according to Branch.

Why are you people acting like you were there when Steve was killed? Why are you assuming Hilton pulled his car in the shop? Were you there and do you know the whole story? If you were in fear for your life you would have done the same thing he did. We all have the right to defend ourselves when we feel like we are being threatened. He only did what comes natural. For those of you talking about Hilton if you think about it you would do the same thing. As for him leaving Steve there for a week without reporting it, Hilton panicked, which is another thing that comes natural to us all. I am sure that for him to do what he did he only felt that his life was in jeopardy. Hilton is not a violent man. He is a kind and loving man that is loved by everyone who has ever been graced by his presence. He is a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend that has the love and support of so many people, close and far. Pray for him and stop judging him. Go to a mirror and look at yourself. When you find yourself without fault then talk about him. The Oxendine and Maynor Family need your prayers not your judgement. Only God can judge and he loves Hilton more now than he ever has before. Why?---because Hilton needs him now more than he ever has before. Thank God he forgives us no matter what. No matter what Hilton did he is still a child of God.

This is a reply for "stopit"

A person who accuses another of not being factual should at least have a few correct facts of their own. The account given by "lookingforanswers" is correct and factual. You ask how I know. These facts were presented to me by the Lead Detective on this case. The presentation included the autopsy report and photos. The autopsy report is "public record" and available to everyone. The discussion with the Police Dept. is only for family members.

YES, Steve has a brother so get your facts right OR STOPIT.

This is a reply to Veracityseeker.

I to have been presented information from this case, there seems to be a problem some where, because we are getting our information from the same place, but it does not seem to match. So, something is wrong some where.

I do know that many members of the Maynor family are friends with members in the Oxendine family and that alot of these comments are NOT helping either family. What WE All should be doing is praying for the families involved. I do know that members of the Maynor family have been to visit the Oxendine family as well as called them, both families have been friends for years.

I NEVER said that Steve didn't have a brother. I stated that if Steve was such a GREAT person, why did the ONLY brother he had, choose NOT to have a relationship with him for the PAST EIGHT years. Steve's brother DID admit to that at his services, didn't he?

First of all MURDER is MURDER!!! How would you feel if this was your father left to rot. However the full details has not been open and the full truth will not come to the light. A dead man can't talk. However, not knowing the facts if the employees where sent home and they know Hilton and Oxendine was left alone to talk, than they were told not to report to work for a week, something should have went off in their minds. This is a devastating case and it seems to be a loss to each family. However, the greatest lost is the Oxendine family that never had that last moment with Mr. Oxendine. I won't be surprise of Mr. Hilton walks away with a slap on the hand. No more than 5-7 years. Was the handgun on scene Oxendines or Hilton's? Who pulled the vet into the shop? Was Hilton really assaulted? There are a lot of unclear questions! Blessed the hearts of both families.

People need to get their stories straight. Hilton was the Oxendine and Stephen was a Maynor. When you say Hilton and Oxendine, you are talking about the same person.

I know one thing is CLEAR StoneStepping is one stupid person! You should first get your facts right, before posting comments for other people to see, it truely shows just how STUPID you are. You know nothing about this case or the facts and it certainly is clear to anyone reading this letter, unless there stupid too. Hilton and Oxendine are the same person. Your article makes no sense! There is only one thing in (Stone Steppings) WHOLE article that is true THE FULL DETAILS HAVE NOT COME TO LIGHT and unless you (StoneStepping) know the FULL DETAILS you shouldn't be writing articles that make NO SENSE (because you DON'T Know THE FACTS). To StoneStepping, I suggested you NOT write any more articles, its clear, you don't know nothing about this case and if you can't get the names right, its most certain nothing else you wrote about it true either. If you want to do something for the Maynor family or Oxendine family, I suggest you pray for them, maybe you can do a better job at that, than you did writing your article.

Let's clear up some of the questions...Hilton Oxendine MURDERED Steve Maynor! Hilton shot Steve three times, twice in the abdomen area and once behind the right ear. The shot behind Steve's right ear was premeditated period!! Steve did not even have a gun on him. Hilton pulled Steve's car into the shop, closed up the shop and left him there for a week before turning himself in. Hilton spent two days in jail and then walked on 25,000 bond. Judge Moore your judgement is wayyyy off. I'm sure if it had of been your family member Hilton wouldn't be walking the streets on a 25,000 bond. Where is the juctice in Robeson County? Could this be why your crime rate is so high and you are constantly reading about murders because the Judges let the criminals walk? Hilton may walk in this life but God will take care of him in the next.

Hilton & Steve Family: Prayers of mercy are still extended. The word is for spectators to examine themselves. There is not A right way to do wrong; we have all sinned and we all come short AND will continue to from the pulpit to the door. If we have not murdered with a weapon, we have surely murdered with the tongue;read the comments! The Victory Key is to repent and to be "quick to forgive" so that you and I will be forgiven. Empathetically, I've tried to identify with both families and sincerely the pain of it all is ever present. I pray that those commenting will examine themselves to realize that no matter what we or our loved ones do, when it is all over healing mercy comes from the Lord. It is a thin line between extremeties and high moments of character insanities causes us to take extreme actions, which I feel may have been the extent of the three shots. I put forth extra effort "not" to allow outside forces via the use of human bodies to empower me to be driven to a state of insane madness that would drive me to pull a trigger more than "3" times. In moments of insane weaknesses, where our lower selves make the wrong choice in a split second that lead to eternal consequences of no turning back; upon our return to sanity, we have insurmountable regrets. I am glad that Hilton knows JESUS and how to get in touch with him this day! "I AM GLAD THAT MAN IS NOT GOD!!" You see spectators, Hilton is not perfect as none of us are, but I can say without a doubt, the good he has done outweighs the and/or this one public act that it seems he will never live down. If you were Hilton, how would you want to be treated at this time. I do not condone the crime, but I do forgive the man and will continue to pray for mercy. I love both families and pray for souls to be saved through it all. EXAMINE YOURSELVES!

It is so easy for you and people like you to say forgive. You wanna know why cause Hilton is still here alive and well. What about Stevie? Its not about forgiving its about murder. How would you and Hilton's family feel if the shoe was on the other foot. Stevie shooting him and leaving him to die. Do you think you and the family would be so forgiving then. And just so you know Stevie's family and friends only want justice. You called this murder (one public act) that Hilton will never live down atleast he is alive. Now EXAMINE YOURSELVES!!

To those looking for answers,

God, Steve, and Hilton only know the truth but there is more to this murder than meets the eye.

For example, do any of you know that steve was shot twice in the stomach and once in the back of his head behind his right ear.

How can such actions be justified shooting a man three times, leaving him for dead, hiding his car, closing up shop for a week and confessing seven days later. After looking at the factors, justification does not come to mind but premeditated does. Keep in mind, in a court of law everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Why is a man who committed such a crime allowed a bond of $25,000 only and out of jail in on day. And shortly after this incident, in a recent dog fighting bust, the dog fighter's bond was ($35,000). How is this even possible. A human life versus a dog, there is not comparison. A family did not have a chance to look upon steve's face one last time, a family still looking for answers to such as crime that seems insignificant since the person that pulled trigger acts as if its nothing and the judicial system apparently thought the same. Or could it be that old faithful good old boy system of Robco.Interesting, no. Did you know that Steve and Hilton were friends, that they were golfing buddies, and that Steve helped drum up car business by referring people in the community to purchase cars from Hilton.

No one is perfect, we all fall short and we all get angry. Ephesians 4:26 states Be ye angry and sin not, let not the sun go down upon your wrath (Ephesians 4:26).

Where are you getting your facts? You don't know what you are talking about! It should be against the law for you to post stuff or make comments about stuff, that you know nothing about? Shot 3 times and one time in the head?

Steve had one brother that had not spoken to him in eight years, if he was such a good person, why would his only brother have choosen not to have a relationship with him if he was such a good person?

Steve never drummed up nothing for Hilton!

Lookingforanswers------you need to stick a sock in your mouth and never be allowed to talk again. Hilton and Steve may have played golf together but that was before he became the big, bad bully pushing people around. Come on buddy, do better than this. Do you even know any facts? You need to be put in time-out.

Please Mr. Douglas, don't you thimk this story has had enough press. Why not remove it and do both the families a favor and leave it in the hands of our justice system. I know both of these families and refuse to allow this case to go to trial on your blog site here.

Henberry45,

We have written ONE story about this alleged murder. I can't control the fact that people want to comment on it.

Is it just me? But this makes no sense! Can u say cold blooded murder? This county just can't let this go come on people!!! Shot someone 3 times, close your shop, hide the car, leave the body a week, go home and act as if your day went great now ppl does this sound like something a good man would do? What is this world coming too? I just hope this county realizes that they are saying it's ok to just go out and kill ppl if you owe them money and don't want to pay them. It all just sounds cut and dry to me just saying!!!!!!!!!

Really people, is attacking Hilton's son and his girlfriend the best you can do? This case is about a man being killed, plain and simple. If you have been wronged in some way by Hilton's "state trooper son" then you should take that up with his superiors. And if his girlfriend has wronged you take it up with her, your statements about them have served no other purpose but to amuse yourself. If you have anything constructive to say or have some evidence that his son or his sons girlfriend helped in any way with the death of Stephen Maynor, take it to the police. But don't waste you time talking trash about these people, it only shows how small and petty you are.

Nobody said anything about son or sons girlfriend being involved with the death. Im saying it sux the son has to get his drunk girlfriend out of trouble and now try to help his father. Its alot for one person is all im saying. I dont think this man thought about how his actions would affect other people like his sons career for example. I live here in robco i dont know why you are trying to act like politics and who you know doesnt play into these things. Im jus surprised we havent heard anything else about this like does he have a lawyer and when a court date is. Dpes he get to stay home until court? Jus curius.

Ultimately 12 of our # should sit in judgement on this case and once all the called in favors, behind closed door deals, possible payoffs and other "urban legends" associated with Robeson Co. justice are done, these 12 folks will decide whether this man is guilty of the charges leveled at him. I only hope that this decision will be based on the evidence presented and the laws of the State of NC rather than those aforementioned "urban legends". If it is not, then we will all share the blame for not solving these issues come election time. If our county truly is about who you know rather than what you've done, then we as voting citizens have allowed it and should feel responsible instead of simply accepting it and blaming someone else.

I'm also confused. I do agree that God is merciful and let he whom is without sin cast the first stone and sin is sin, but society and our legal system have assigned punishment and consequences to crimes based on the perception of severity. So yes, sin is sin and we will all be judged by God in the end. However, the argument that sin is sin should not relieve someone of accountability legally. Murder would obviously carry a much higher penalty than, say, vandalism or not paying a parking ticket. How does one get out on $25,000 bond who has taken a life? Not to mention letting it sit for a week in a garage without telling anyone. I guess that's what happens when someone has a State Trooper for a son, huh? Politics and being longtime friends with those in power ahould not be a barrier to justice. So does he get to roam free until this goes

to court? And even then good luck finding a jury who isn't

friends with him and will let him off. there are two losses in this case for two families and a community. And too bad for the son who I hear should be used to fixing peoples problems with that drunk of a girlfriend of his. I pray for peace for both families, but as a previous poster said, we should expect the justice system to work in this case.

I personally did not know either man. The first thing I would like to do is send out my prayers to both families. I did get a chance to speak with Mr. Hilton. I have heard of stories such as this one and for the past 5 years I have devoted my life to take care of prisoners(murderders, child molesters, and any other crime you can think of). We all fall short of God's glory. As I told Mr. Hilton there is not one sin that is no bigger than the other. Our God is a merciful God and he will forgive you if you sincerly ask for forgiveness. No one knows the reasons behind this story and a lot of other stories from people that are in prison. I do know that I have a life to live and I want to make it in heaven. I live my life loving everyone no matter what they have done. They have to take that up with God. Only God knows Mr. HIlton's heart and he also knows your heart. The things we do everyday is not always glorified in God's eyes so we have to ask for forgiveness. We do not always agree with the court systems and law enforcement on their decisions either. All I can say is we are accountable for our own actions and remember there is only one hell. So the sin you do everyday is no worse than what you feel Mr. HIlton has done. Again, I am not justifying Mr. Hilton's actions and my heart sincerly goes out to both families. Until you find yourself in certain situations you do not ever know how you are going to react. Never underestimate the power of your mind.

I too would like an explanation from the editor, if I may? First off the article needs to be corrected to show that Hilton Oxendine was given a bond, a $25000.00 bond? So Mr. Editor, how is it possible to be charged with 1st degree murder and be given such a negligible bond and for it to go unreported and unquestioned by the media??? How in the world is that even possible? I could slap a women and my bond would most likely 10 times greater than Hilton's.., plus it would take 3 day for me to get out of jail.

Tens of thousands of people thought Bernie Madoff was a great man too... Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 federal felonies and admitted to turning his wealth management business into a massive Ponzi scheme that defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars. Know tens of millions of people worldwide realize he isn't a great man after all. He's just a thief on a global billion dollar scale...

Did I miss something here? What was the bond amount set at? Was Mr. Oxendine released on bond? It is probally not a good thing that the body was hidden (?) for a week but if Mr. Oxendine is a person who has never had any criminal issues I wonder if he might have been in shock? Not making any excuses as this seems like a pretty cut and dry 2nd degree murder based only on what the article states. Any just for the record NC has passed several laws that allow for self defense it also has laws that DO NOT ALLOW self-help evictions period. I hope that both families and friends of both of these men find God's comfort in dealing with their losses.

If not for the week long delay after the killing and especially all the remarks that Hilton's a good and even great man, I wouldn't even comment on this story.

You never really know anyone and often times you never will truly know someone unless the layers are pulled back publicly. History is full of good and even great people until they're exposed for what they really are; murderers, pedophiles, rapist, drug dealers, thevies, spies, etc... and the list goes on and on. They're all often thought of as good people until proven otherwise.

Case in point, John Wayne Gacy. He was father, husband, businessman and community volunteer among other things. He was even once given U.S. Secret Service clearance and spent time with President Carter's wife, First Lady Rosalyn Carter, doing charity work. It wasn't until years later that he, like Hilton, "turned himself in and confessed" to the authorities what he had done. Cops then went to Gacys house and excavated 26 bodies from the crawl space. It wasn't until that moment did everyone realize he wasn't as great a man as previously thought.

Maybe Hilton was a good person prior to the events of Feb 20th. I'm just looking at his confessed actions and the delay of a solid week...

im not from this area and dont know either person, however on the surface it does not look like self defense to me unless the guy that got shot had a weapon himself, and I dont remember reading that anywhere. If it's just a case of 2 men shoving each other and then one decides to pull a gun, it's murder and he should go to prison, no matter how good of a man the community thinks he is. If he is allowed to stay free among society, what happens the next time someone makes him mad or shoves him? You cannot shoot people just because they shoved you or hit you. It may be a little differt if the man was beating the crap out of him and would not let up, but I did not read that either....it just said there was some shoving.
