LUMBERTON — An Elizabethtown man was sentenced to 51 to 71 months in prison on Monday for the shooting death of a bouncer at a Lumberton nightclub.

Jerome Richardson, 24, pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting the death of 35-year-old Michael Chavis on March 3, 2007, according to Martha Duvall, the assistant district attorney who was the prosecutor. Richardson had faced a charge of first-degree murder.

He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Greg Bell.

Duvall said that Richardson was offered the plea agreement because “some of the facts were in dispute.” The plea was arranged before the start of the trial.

Chavis was shot in the parking lot of the Players nightclub, which was located on Lackey Street, at about 2 a.m. after a fight broke out, according to Duvall. She said Chavis, who was also armed with a gun, was asking Richardson and several other people to leave when he was shot in the chest.

Police said that Richardson acted like he was leaving but turned around and fired toward two shots toward Chavis. Another bouncer grabbed Chavis’ gun and held Richardson at gunpoint until police arrived.

Duvall said that a weapon was found under a car in the parking lot but investigators were not able to lift fingerprints. Police who were responding to a separate incident involving a stolen car said they heard several gunshots at the time of Chavis’ death.

Duvall said witnesses did say that they saw Richardson with the gun that killed Chavis and they saw him drop it after the shooting.

To see a innocent man serve time and feel as though justice is served is just ignorant. Our faith is in God and not man ! Someone had to do the time for the crime no evidence what so ever and the real killer family is grieving cause they lost him last year. What so bad is the other suspect was not question reasoning being is because his sister worked for the victim's family and they look in her face everyday. So happen that young man passed away last year and he took the truth with him. Also no one is looking at the Criminal Record the victim had, the fact he had a gun and the residue that proved he fired his gun. This was all senseless since when bouncers carry guns. Not only that look at all of the bouncers criminal records. Article was to try annd make the family of Richardson's feel bad. He took the plea and stated he was innocent but because it was in his best of interest. Justice has been served cause God.

SORRY TO SAY THAT OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM GROWS MORE PATHETIC AS THE YEARS GO BY. YOU CAN GET MORE TIME 4 ROBBING A BANK THAN KILLING SOMEONE. NO WONDER PEOPLE ARE NOT AFRAID TO KILL SOMEONE THESE DAYS. WHAT IF HE SHOT THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER? WOULD HE OF GOT OFF SO EASILY? UNLESS IT WAS SELF DEFENCE HE SHOULD HAVE GOT THE DEATH PENALTY AND EVEN IF HE DID IT WOULD STILL TAKE THEM 25 YEARS OR LONGER TO CARRY IT OUT. OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM DOES NOT WANT CRIME TO STOP BECAUSE THERE IS 2 MUCH MONEY INVOLVED!!!! IF CRIME WAS DRASTCALLY CUT DOWN SOME PEOPLE WOULD BE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB!!!

Thefacts may have been weak in this case but it's a shame to see a man get away with cold blooded murder and yes, he'll kill again when he gets out in about 4.5 years...

51 to 71 months? Absurd. Should have gotten 10 years minimum...
