Mary Winton Brady Lewis, 99, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2009,
at Wesley Pines with her family by her side.
A memorial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in
Fairmont. Burial will follow in Floyd Memorial Cemetery in Fairmont.
Mary Winton Lewis was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Bladen County, the eldest
of six children born to William Lee Brady and Flora Ann Ray Brady. Her
husband, Jetter Wilton Lewis Sr. died in 1992.
She attended Flora McDonald college and majored in music. She worked
for the sheriff of Bladen County before her marriage to Jetter Wilton
Lewis Sr. They were employed at the shipyard in Wilmington during
World War II. In 1945, they moved to Fairmont and established Lewis &
Brady Builders Supply Inc.
Mary Winton was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fairmont for
65 years and held offices in all aspects of the church, where she
served as organist for 25 years. She was a talented gardener and an
avid bridge player. She loved her family, people of all ages, her club
activities, trips to White Lake, and the beach.
Her daughter Ellen Ann Lewis Bessent-Blust (1947-2004) and her
grandson William Stanfield Lewis (1963-1983) preceded her in death, as
did all her siblings, Flora Lee Bowers, Clara Neil DeVane, William
Lawson Brady, Spencer Jones Brady and Virgil Ray Brady.
Mary Wilton's memory is cherished by her son, Jetter and wife Carol
Anne, both of Fairmont; a grandson, Jetter Stephens Lewis and wife
Cindy, both of Marietta; her granddaughters, Marianne Lewis Leggett
and husband Kenny, both of Fairmont, Mariellen Bessent Minor and
husband Chris, both of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and four
great-grandchildren, Meredith Layne Smith, Jetter Calhoun Lewis,
Oliver Slate Lewis and Catherine Bessent Minor.
